S2 Project 3 - Photo Essay

By Mary Ellen Mark
I chose this photo because I think it has a good story behind it. The sign gives a lot of information about the time of year this is taking place in. We're given that it's the holiday season and that folks are helping out those who are struggling around this time.

The Culture of ALLY
In the past 2 weeks, ALLY (Asian Leaders for the Liberation of Youth), has been working on painting a mural at Mojo Crepes. Originally, the mural we wanted was suppose to be in Fubonn but due to some complications, we had moved it to Mojos. Mojos is a really big part of ALLY's "culture" since a majority of our members go there weekly to play pool, eat, or just hang out. I decided to shoot these people because they are the ones that decided to show up to help out with the mural. To me, ALLY is a happy group. We work towards holding a safe space for folks to express their feelings. I think ALLY is important to the Franklin community because ALLY actually started at Franklin a few years ago. A majority of our group are Franklin students and we wish to expand outwards towards other PPS schools. ALLY impacts not only Franklin but all of Oregon since we have won our Ethnic Studies campaign which means all PPS schools will have Ethnic Studies implemented into the high schools. Last year, that was actually pushed towards all of Oregon.
